The English Phonetic Alphabet

Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Echo Foxtrot Golf Hotel India Juliet Kilo Lima Mike November Oscar Papa Quebec Romeo Sierra Tango Uniform Victor Whiskey Xray Yankee Zulu

Zero One Two Tree Fower Fife Six Seven Eight Niner

This alphabet came into use in (around) 1955, and is approved by NATO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the FAA, and the International Telecommunication Union. Different bodies prefer different spellings of these words.  It is commonly used by all branches of the US Armed Services.  The British sometimes substitute Indigo for India.

There have been several such alphabets in use for at least the last hundred and fifty years, and in many languages other than English.

Before 1954, the US Navy used the following phonetic radio alphabet:  Able Baker Charlie Dog Easy Fox George How Item Jig King Love Mike Nan Oboe Peter Queen Roger Sugar Tare Uncle Victor William X-ray Yoke Zebra

The Telecomm B phonetic alphabet:  Alfred Benjamin Charles David Edward Frederick George Harry Isaac Jack King London Mary Nellie Oliver Peter Queen Robert Samuel Tommy Uncle Victor William Xray Yellow Zebra

Nancy is commonly substituted for Nellie as well as Boy for Benjamin.
